Doctors are not recommending to use pacifiers as it often becomes a reason for newborns to refuse breast feeding.
But often pacifier is the only way to quieten the child (and parents!).
So, what to do?

It was a big fight for us. We didn't have a pacifier initially and bought one only when our son was about 2 weeks old - we bought it because it was awful and we hoped it will help us at least a bit. When we got it we clearly understood that we should have done it from the very beginning Smile

After all, eventually our kid has stopped using it with fairly no efforts.

I also think that the negative influences of pacifiers are often exaggerated. You just shouldn't give it, if a child really does not ask for it. Smile

I agree with nataly, the negative effects are super exaggerated. My baby has a couple of pacifiers, sometimes she wants them, sometimes she doesnt care..I give her if she asked for it, good thing about her she does not depend on it a lot.
